Chairman of the Board of Directors

Fred D. Hutchison, Chairman
Fred Hutchison is an attorney and a founding partner of Hutchison Law Group PLLC in Raleigh, North Carolina. His practice is focused on venture capital, securities and mergers and acquisitions.

Prior to founding Hutchison Law Group PLLC in 1996, Fred was a partner at Petree Stockton & Robinson (now Kilpatrick Stockton) and Moore & Van Allen. He spent five years practicing in the municipal finance, securities and bank regulatory areas with Covington & Burling in Washington, D.C.

Fred was the founding President of the Council for Entrepreneurial Development. He also served as Chairman of the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Business Innovation Technology Advancement Center, founding Chairman of The Sports Council in Raleigh, Chairman of the Triangle Community Foundation and Co-Chairman of the Entrepreneurial Advisory Committee for the Catalyst Project.

Fred has served as a general partner in Research Triangle Ventures, a $10.3 million early stage venture capital fund focused on companies in the Research Triangle Park region of North Carolina.

Fred has been recognized as one of the Best Lawyers in America., and in 1990, he was recognized by Electronic Business magazine as one of the top 10 technology lawyers in the country. Over the years, Fred has represented more than 200 entrepreneurial companies and has worked with some of the Triangle's leading technology companies.

Fred earned his B.S. degree in Business Administration at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received his law degree from the University of Virginia.

Charles A. Hayes
Charles Hayes is the President and CEO of the Research Triangle Regional Partnership (RTRP). Prior to joining RTRP in 1996, Mr. Hayes served as president of the Moore County Economic Development Corporation.

Mr. Hayes is a speaker on economic development issues and has addressed the National Governor's Association, the United States Economic Development Administration's Annual Conference, as well as many other such organizations. Mr. Hayes is active in numerous professional organizations and has co-authored the International Economic Development Council's course, Managing, Marketing and Financing Rural Economic Development.

Mr. Hayes is a member of the UNC Board of Governors. He is also active in numerous professional organizations and his professional experience includes both public and private sector positions. Positions held by Mr. Hayes include NC Community College System instructor, local economic development director, North Carolina county manager, and business principal/owner.

Mr. Hayes earned his BSBA degree and his MA Ed. from East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. He received a Basic Economic Development Certification and a Government County Administration Certification from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also received a Certified Economic Development Certification from the International Economic Development Council.

William F. Little, Ph.D.
Dr. William F. Little is retired from the University of North Carolina after serving four years as Senior Vice President and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Prior to his last post with the University, Dr. Little served in numerous administrative posts with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill: Associate Dean of the Graduate School for Research Administration; Chairman, Department of Chemistry; Chairman, Division of the Natural Sciences; Vice Chancellor for Development and Public Service; and Interim Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.

Dr. Little's long, dedicated career began in 1955 when he assumed his first faculty position at Reed College in Portland, Oregon. In 1956, he joined the chemistry faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He progressed through the ranks to University Distinguished Professor, serving as Chair of the Department for five years. His research interests were in organometallic chemistry.

Throughout his career, Dr. Little held numerous offices with the Research Triangle Foundation of North Carolina, the Research Triangle Institute, the Triangle Universities Center for Advanced Studies, Inc., the Arts and Sciences Foundation and the John Motley Morehead Central Selection Committee.

Dr. Little received his B.S. degree in Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics from Lenoir-Rhyne College. He earned his M. A. degree in Physical Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also earned his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Chapel Hill. Dr. Little spent a year in postdoctoral research at University College in London.



Robert K. McMahan, Ph.D.
Dr. Robert K. McMahan is the Senior Advisor to the Governor for Science and Technology. He is also Executive Director of the North Carolina Board of Science and Technology. He advises the Governor, the Secretary of Commerce, and the Boards of Science and Technology and Economic Development about science and technology matters and advises the state government on science, technology and entrepreneurship. He also serves as the primary liaison to the University of North Carolina System, the SBTDC, the NC Community College System, other private colleges and universities, and key agencies and associations with regard to science and technology matters.

Dr. McMahan also currently holds the position of Research Professor of Physics and Astronomy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he teaches and conducts research in cosmology, instrumentation, and the large scale structure of the universe. He holds the position of Adjunct Professor of Technology and Management at the North Carolina State University College of Textiles as well.

Prior to his current position, Dr. McMahan was a Senior Technology Strategist for In-Q-Tel, a private venture capital organization funded by the CIA and NIMA. Before joining In-Q-Tel, he was Executive Vice President of Engineering/Research and Development for the Swiss-based, mid-cap GretagMacbeth, LLC, where he was responsible for the company's worldwide research, engineering, and product development activities and for the creation and operation of the company's Advanced Technology Laboratories in the Research Triangle Park.

He has published over forty papers in scientific and engineering journals, sits on a number of state and corporate boards and commissions, and holds multiple patents in the field.

Dr. McMahan received Bachelors Degrees in Physics and in the History of Art from Duke University. He earned his Ph.D. degree in Physics from Dartmouth and a postdoctoral fellowship from the Harvard University/Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory Center for Astrophysics.
